Top 3 Books of 2018!

As an avid reader, I love checking out all different types of books! I  aim to read at least one book a month each year, and this year is no different! I’ve read 11 books so far this year and they’ve been a mix of sci fi, self help, non-fiction and fiction. While all of them were awesome, I wanted to share my Top 3 favorite books of 2018!

Side note: To keep track of the books I’ve read, I use Goodreads.com – literally the best reading/book review app I have on my phone! It’s super helpful, and it uses Machine Learning to recommend books!

While I normally gravitate towards sci-fi books, this year only ONE made my Top 3 List! Pretty crazy! The other two are pure Girl Power reads.

These books are in no particular order, and I’ve linked them so you can buy them for yourself! Let’s take a look!

#GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso

#GirlBoss had been on my To-Read list ever since I watched the Netflix series Girl Boss. Both the book and the Netflix series are based on the story of Sophia Amoruso – the creator of Nasty Gal. Nasty Gal is a clothing retailer that focuses on edgy, trendy fashion for women. Sophia’s journey to building the Nasty Gal empire was nothing short of incredible and 100% inspirational.

Her story starts off with her in her early 20’s hustling to survive. Dumpster diving, getting fired, and taking odd jobs, she really started at the bottom. But my favorite part? She always kept her hustle mindset. When she eventually discovers her knack for reselling vintage pieces on eBay, her life changed forever.

Sophia Amoruso built a fashion empire with grit, intuition and an I don’t give a damn what you think mentality. When bigger companies approached her to work with them she showed them the door if they didn’t align with her values. She embodied sticking to your instincts.

Her badass story has inspired me to stay true to myself and never compromise my values to make it to the top. #GirlBoss a must read for anyone looking for a little inspiration or motivation to live authentically and unapologetically.

Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu

Moxie is the girl power book I wish I had had when I was in middle and high school. I feel like I would have definitely identified with a lot of the social and personal issues it talks about! This book follows the journey of Vivian – a high schooler who grows increasingly tired of all of the sexist dress codes and inappropriate football players at her school. She struggles to find a way to cope with the accepted way of life at her school – until she discovers Moxie.

What comes next is a revolution. A secret society of empowered females ready to take on the patriarchy – head on

This book is super relatable and inspiring for anyone who identifies as a female. And if you’re looking for a book to read or share with a young future feminist, Moxie is it!

The Rule of Three by Eric Walters

The Rule of Three is one of those books that makes you feel a little like you’re seeing the future of civilization – at its worst.

Imagine if one day all electricity including internet(!) disappeared. Well that’s exactly what happens in The Rule of Three. Food, water, community and safety are all in peril – and it will take the work of a rag tag team to maintain the semblance of humanity.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced read with a this could actually happen vibe, check out The Rule of Three!

Those were my Top 3 books of 2018! I had so much fun exploring genres I normally wouldn’t read! I’ve also been utilizing my local library this year, a tip I cannot recommend enough! It’s helped keep my bookshelves decluttered and organized. If I read a book I love enough to purchase, then it earns a space on my bookshelf!
